The Poor Man’s Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra (But Not Really)

2020 is a special year for the Mi Series, as Xiaomi will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its popular flagship line. Though we’ve seen the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro earlier this year, and while they do cost more than their previous top-end phones, they now offer one of the fastest wireless charging solutions. Unlike Samsung and Apple, Xiaomi never introduced an “Ultra” or “Pro Max” version of its phone, which is obviously the trend this year. Well, that was the case until we heard about the Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition.

Your Typical Beastly Specs

Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro

Much like the rest of the Mi 10 Series, the specs of the Extreme edition is top-notch. We can, at least, expect Snapdragon 865+, up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, 108MP quad-cameras, 90Hz FHD+ AMOLED, and at least 4500mAh battery with up to 30W wireless charging and 50W wired charging.

Thanks to leaked official posters, we have a better idea of what the cameras will offer. And, the first thing you will notice here is the huge camera hump. Xiaomi appears to be joining Samsung in the race for the biggest camera module. While Samsung removed the 100x Space Zoom branding on the Note 20 Ultra, probably due to gimmicky feedback from the S20 Ultra, Xiaomi boldly included it. The renders show four huge lenses. The imprint also reveals that the phone is capable of 12mm ultrawide and up to 120mm zoom. According to leaks, the main camera uses a 108MP sensor, 20MP for the ultrawide, 8MP for telephoto, and a periscope lens.

Outside cameras, the battery is something to get excited about as well. Not because of the capacity, mind you, but it’s about the 100W or 120W fast-charging solution. OPPO, Realme, and Vivo recently announced their 120W technology, and we’re about to see Xiaomi’s implementation as well.

As for the rest, there will be a new cooling system and an under-screen fingerprint scanner. Now, one of the interesting rumors out there is the inclusion of the first under-screen selfie camera. We’ve seen prototypes before but not on a product. This should be interesting to see, as the Mi 10 is said to launch today, August 11.

Price and Availability

For the global market, the Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition will be introduced as Mi 10 Ultra. Based on a GeekBench listing, the configuration could reach up to 16GB RAM. It may also mean that there will be several models of the phone. The top model of the Mi 10 Pro nearly retailed at $1000. While we don’t expect the Mi 10 Ultra to start at that price point, we do expect a model to be that expensive. Speaking of, the poster also revealed two outfits for the upcoming phone — a ceramic white finish and a transparent black.
