Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX)’s Starlink is set to launch its commercial operations in the Philippines by December 2022 after receiving the green light for its Low-Earth Orbit satellite internet service.
Rebecca Hunter, a Starlink representative in Manila, expressed hope for a successful launch of Starlink’s services by year’s end.
In May, Starlink was finally approved by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to operate as a value-added service (VAS) provider, completing a business proposition discussed between SpaceX and some Philippine agencies.
NTC will be able to provide a high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service, which will allow for a download speed of somewhere between 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and 200 megabits per second (Mbps).
With Starlink’s low-altitude satellites, the company is revolutionizing existing satellite-based technology, providing exceptional internet services, such as streaming, video calling, online gaming, and various high-data activities on the same technology.
According to Hunter, one router kit costs $599 (approximately ₱33,000), for a single purchase. Although there is no data cap on the subscription, the price is $99 (around ₱5,500) per month.
