Going back to MWC 2024 last March, Don McGuire, Qualcomm‘s Chief Marketing Officer, created a buzz by unveiling details about the highly-anticipated Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
The excitement is centered around its major upgrades, including the new Oryon cores and the use of TSMC’s advanced second-generation 3nm process technology.
According to a leak, the Adreno 750 GPU in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will deliver substantial gains in performance-per-watt. It’s said to match the peak performance of the MediaTek Dimensity 9300’s GPU while consuming only half the power. This could lead to improved battery life and cooler operation during intensive tasks like gaming.
However, the CPU side of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 presents a less exciting picture. The same leak suggests that the new chip’s multi-core performance, clocking in around 7,300 at just 8W, is on par with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and still lags behind Apple’s A17 Pro.
The expected improvement in CPU power efficiency is reportedly minimal compared to the current generation.
For those focused on CPU performance, waiting for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 might be advisable.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is set to make its official debut this October 21-23, 2024 at the Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii. Who’s excited?
