Samsung is introducing a new feature Temporary Cloud Backup for Galaxy smartphone and tablet users. Unlike Google Drive, it’s not meant for long-term storage.
Instead, it’s similar to Apple’s temporary iCloud storage, offering users unlimited storage for a short period of 30 days from their initial backup, accepting files under 100GB.
These limits should suffice for users to find alternative storage, transfer data to a new device, or repair their original phone.
Importantly, this feature syncs with Samsung’s Maintenance Mode, ensuring that personal files, including those in the Secure Folder, remain private even when technicians are involved. It also supports various file types, including data from third-party apps.
However, there are some conditions to note. It’s only available on devices running One UI 6, excluding older Samsung flagships.
Initially, it’s rolling out to Galaxy S and Z series models in South Korea, with global availability expanding from this fall.
The unique aspect here is that this service is not exclusive to Samsung users; anyone can utilize it, and it’s entirely free.
But be cautious, as if you don’t retrieve your backed-up data within 30 days, all files will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. So, while it’s a free storage option, it’s not a replacement for services like OneDrive.
