Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Max to Receive 2024 Update

Apple is preparing to make significant changes to its AirPods lineup, according to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In 2024, updates are expected for both the standard and Max, while enhancements for the Pro are on the horizon for 2025.

Simultaneously, Apple is planning to discontinue the 2nd and 3rd-generation standard AirPods and introduce two different price points for the upcoming 4th-generation.

The 4th-generation standard are anticipated to combine features from both the regular and Pro, possibly with shorter earphone stems.

The higher-end version of the standard AirPods is likely to include active noise cancellation, similar to the Pro and Max, and an improved fit for added comfort. There’s some uncertainty regarding potential additions to the charging case, like speakers or a USB-C interface.

The AirPods Max will not only receive functional updates but also see changes in aesthetics, with more color options expected and the potential addition of a USB-C interface.

As for the AirPods Pro 3rd generation, it’s rumored to feature a new design and more efficient internal chips. Notably, there’s talk of “hearing health” features, suggesting these AirPods could collect hearing data, potentially serving as an alternative to traditional hearing aids in certain situations.

This year, Apple already updated the 2nd generation AirPods Pro with USB‐C, so the next generation is likely to follow suit.

Apple has filed recent patents hinting at future AirPods potentially having features like reading biosignals such as brain waves using in-ear electrodes and adapting to different environmental conditions.
