Samsung officially launches the Quad-camera phone, Samsung Galaxy A9 2018 version. It is the first mid-range phone and even on a production Android smartphone to feature four lenses on the back. With an estimated $600 to $700 price, do the four camera setup really brings value for money?
In details, the four cameras include a wide, telephoto, depth, and the regular sensor. Each camera works independently aside from the main and depth sensor that work in tandem to produce blur on portrait photos. But why four cameras if they cannot work together in producing one better image?
If you are looking for flexible shooting capabilities that work in any most scenes, the Galaxy A9’s cameras are useful. However, if you are expecting an image binning or combined image, then the quad shooter will fail its users as it will make the other lenses pretty pointless for most of the time.
Sample images from Quad cameras of Samsung Galaxy A9 2018 (pre-production software)
Regardless of how these cameras work, it is still up to the quality of the images. But so far the latest samples of the Samsung quad-shooter point to a mediocre telephoto and wide angle sensors. Even the portrait shots are looking to be average in the images we’ve gathered from online given we already see better cameras at the lower price range.
So camera aside, will the Galaxy A9 be worth it? We will find out once we get our hands on soon.
