PhilHealth System Restored After Ransomware Attack

Nearly two months after the Medusa ransomware struck, PhilHealth, has finally restored its web-based system. This cyberattack hit PhilHealth on September 22, causing a shutdown of critical services.

This information was disclosed by Senator Pia Cayetano during discussions on the Department of Health and PhilHealth’s proposed 2024 budget.

Senator Cayetano mentioned that as of November 14, the web-based systems, such as e-claims and members’ portal, have been restored. The core system is also back online, although some utility systems, like the risk information system and other internal systems, are still undergoing restoration.

In efforts to prevent similar cyber incidents in the future, PhilHealth has taken steps to enhance its security measures. This includes establishing a crisis committee, implementing a business continuity plan, and seeking expertise by hiring a cybersecurity consultant.
