Which is a better buy between the OPPO A9 2020 and Vivo V17 Pro?

Design and Display

While both phones nearly weigh 400g combined, the A9 2020 has a different reason why it is heavy. Instead of having back-to-back glass panels like the Vivo V17 Pro, OPPO’s newest mid-range phone has a massive battery inside that makes it nearly as heavy. Whether you like it or not, the colors on the back of the two phones are clean and rid of confusing patterns. Since the V17 Pro is nearly all-glass, it feels more substantial in the hands.

Although A9 2020 has the larger display size at 6.5″, the V17 Pro’s 6.44″ screen doesn’t come with any sort of notch or pinhole. It also has a sharper FHD+ resolution with very punchy color quality from Super AMOLED panel. There’s also Corning Gorilla Glass 6 here for scratch protection, something the A9 2020 is missing.

Performance

Both chipsets are based on the 11nm process node, meaning, power efficiency should be identical. But the Snapdragon 675 of V17 Pro is a bit more capable of handling demanding tasks than the 665 of A9 2020. And while both come with 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM, only OPPO’s phone have the room for microSD expansion.

There’s also a significant difference in unlocking the phones. The capacitive fingerprint scanner of the A9 2020 is more reliable, whether it’s speed or accuracy than the under-screen scanner of V17 Pro. We also love the dual-stereo speaker design of A9 2020, with added 24-bit audio playback support via the headphone jack.

Cameras

We have two sets of four main cameras here — the A9 2020 is rocking a 48MP Sony sensor, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP monochrome, and 2MP depth. Whereas V17 Pro swaps out the monochrome sensor for a 2MP depth. But if you’re looking for better video quality, the A9 2020 features electronic image stabilization (EIS) for smoother footage.

Housed inside the notch of A9 2020 is a 16MP selfie camera. This is where V17 Pro stands out. It features dual-selfie cameras in its pop-up mechanism. One has a wide 32MP sensor while the other is an 8MP ultrawide sensor.

Battery, Charging and Ports

The A9 2020 has the larger battery size at 5000mAh, and while it does lack fast charging, you can top up other devices via its reverse wired charging. As for V17 Pro, it has a smaller but generous 4100mAH battery that supports 18W fast charging that allows full tank around 90 minutes.

Conclusion

The A9 2020 has a price of P15,990 while V17 Pro is at P21,999. For that ultrawide selfie experience, you’re paying a lot. Outside the selfie camera, you can get nearly the same experience, if not better on other phones, such as the Galaxy A50s (P18,990) for the display experience or Nokia 7.2 (P15,990) for design and better software. We just feel like OPPO offers a better value smartphone in this comparison.
