The House of Representatives has called on Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to attend a House hearing with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to discuss social media safety.
The hearing will cover concerns about harmful content, platform accountability, and online safety for Filipino users.
The call follows ongoing concerns raised by the DICT about Meta, particularly issues involving children and young people.
In a statement on September 16, the DICT said the House raised concerns about Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Materials (CSAEM).
The department also pointed to other online concerns, including illegal gambling, cyberbullying, and risks linked to social media use.
DICT Secretary Henry R. Aguda said the department respects the House’s oversight role, including its decision to defer the DICT budget while the issues involving Meta remain unresolved.
Moreover, DICT said it will continue working with Congress, law enforcement agencies, child protection groups, and technology companies to improve online safety in the Philippines.
