Microsoft Plans to Buy TikTok from ByteDance

President Donald Trump has confirmed that Microsoft is one of the U.S. companies considering the purchase of TikTok.

This move aims to meet government requirements and avoid a potential ban on the popular app. Despite disagreeing at first, the social media app is now exploring options to comply with U.S. demands while keeping the app operational.

For context, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, requires ByteDance, to sell its U.S. operations by January 19.

TikTok has resumed service in the United States after being offline for over 12 hours last January 19, 2025.

The app, owned by China’s ByteDance, now faces a deadline of April 4 to secure new ownership after President Trump extended the original deadline by 75 days and expressed interest in a bidding war for the platform.

Because of the bidding war, other parties are reportedly interested in the acquisition, though their identities remain undisclosed.

Lawmakers continue to push for a resolution that ensures data security while keeping TikTok available in the U.S.
