Using a few quick taps, any call currently in progress from your iPhone can be transferred to an iPad or Mac.

What are the reasons for the call switching?

You may find it difficult to comprehend why an iPad or Mac should be used to make a call. In addition to its convenience, it is essential to remember that your tablet has a much larger battery and a far louder speaker than your smartphone.

You can now switch the phone connection in the middle of a conventional phone call if the iPhone is using your cellular account. However, this app cannot use some features, such as FaceTime and Wi-Fi calling. Also, third-party VoIP applications, like Viber or Skype, use the CallKit framework for interfacing with the Phone app.

The prerequisites include:

To ensure your devices are compatible with Continuity, you must ensure they meet its requirements before setting up the service. Suppose you have recently purchased a new gadget within the previous 5–6 years. In that case, a new device will likely quickly meet the requirements, so you can proceed to complete the remainder of the conditions.

Your devices should be connected to a similar Wi-Fi network and have Wi-Fi turned on. There is an option to enable Calls from iPhone on the FaceTime settings page on both iPad and Mac devices.

It is necessary to be running iOS 11.2 or above on both an iPhone and iPad to switch calls between them. macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 or later must be installed on a Mac to receive a call transfer.

In addition, you will need to enable the Allow Calls on Other Devices option. To turn it on, follow these easy steps:

In iPhone Settings, go to Phone and tap on Calls on Other Devices to get the service to work. If you plan on taking calls on your iPad and Mac, make sure the switches are turned on on those devices.

Notable Features:

  • From the iPhone, you can transfer a cellular phone call to a nearby iPad, and from the iPad to the iPhone
  • Cellular phone calls can be transferred from the iPhone to the Mac

Limitations:

  • Sending a Wi-Fi call from one device to another
  • Share an audio or video call between two devices when you use FaceTime
  • You will not be able to transfer an audio or video call from the iPhone to the Apple Watch
  • If your iPhone is not on the same Wi-Fi network as a connected device, it will not be able to receive a cellular call
  • The connection between your iPhone and a cellular call that was accepted on your Mac could not be transferred back

If you are in an ongoing phone call, you can locate the Audio button on the calling screen. After that, choose your available iPad or Mac from the list to transfer the call to.

If the call was transferred, the target device should show the calling screen as soon as the call was transferred.

You could, for instance, see an incoming call on your iPhone, pick it up, and decide to continue the conversation on your iPad. This is because the speaker on the tablet is considerably louder, and the battery is significantly larger.

From the iPhone’s calling screen, you can choose the Audio menu from the menu bar to return the call to your iPhone. You can approach the Phone app by swiping down the green status bar on the screen. This will automatically take you to the Phone app, and you can make the change there.

Note that an iPhone call that has been transferred to another device is marked with “From Your iPhone.”

Always remember that every device has Wi-Fi switched on and be a part of the same wireless network. On your iPhone’s screen, the Audio button’s iconography changes dynamically based on the device to which a call has been transferred.

It also functions opposite from Mac to an iPhone, but only if you answer the call on your Mac first. In other words, unlike an iPhone and iPad, a Mac and an iPhone cannot be switched between.
