How to Change Microsoft Edge to Search Google Instead of Bing

Bing is the default search engine for Microsoft Edge, but you can quickly switch to Google or DuckDuckGo in the Settings menu if you prefer something different. Whether you’re using Edge on Windows 10, Windows 11, or a Mac, here’s how.

Switch the Default Search Engine in Microsoft Edge

Open a new Edge browser tab first. In Microsoft’s cutting-edge Edge browser, click the menu button (three dots) in the top-right corner and choose “Settings” to make Google or another search engine your default.

You’re do now. Edge will utilize your chosen search engine the next time you do a search from the address bar or by right-clicking text on a web page and choosing “Search the web.”

You may close Settings if you’re content with your selection. Otherwise, select “Manage Search Engines” to modify the list of search engines that are display in the default list. A list of search engines will be displayed. They can be taken from the list, or you can click “Add” and enter the URL of your own search engine to be added.

When you utilize search engines, Edge will do so automatically. If you prefer a different search engine, for instance, Edge advises you to “open a new tab, go to the search engine you’d like to add and search for something.” If the search engine is set up properly to offer this, it will appear as an option in the list after you’ve used it.

5 8 e1661499097220The search field on Edge’s New Tab page will continue to be a Bing search box even after you change your default search engine. From the Edge New Tab screen, you may utilize the address bar to perform a search using Google or another search engine.

Switch the Default Search Engine in Classic Microsoft Edge

The instructions for changing your default browser differ from those above if you’re running Windows 10 and the legacy version of Microsoft Edge, which Microsoft currently deems to be obsolete. Here’s how to do it.

Step One: Get More Search Engines

Microsoft Edge no longer makes use of search engines that you must download from Microsoft’s website. Instead, Edge recognizes this and records the search engine information when you access a website that exposes its search engine information using the “OpenSearch” standard.

Google Chrome operates in a similar manner; simply visit a website that uses OpenSearch, and Chrome will recognize it.

In order to add a search engine to Edge, all you have to do is go to its website. Visit Google’s webpage if you wish to install it. Visit the DuckDuckGo webpage for more information. Once you’ve done that, follow the steps in the next section to set it as the default.

Step Two: Change Your Default Search Engine

Click the menu button, which is the button with three dots in the top-right corner of the Microsoft Edge window, to switch your search engine. From the menu, choose “Settings.”

img 5ddf27de2a762You’ll see a list of available search providers. Select the search engine you want to use and click or tap “Set as Default”.

img 5ddf282326f1bMake sure you’ve visited the search engine’s homepage first if the search engine you wish to utilize isn’t listed here. That search engine doesn’t yet support OpenSearch if you have visited the homepage and it still isn’t visible. You could wish to get in touch with the search engine and request that it support OpenSearch so that Microsoft Edge can utilize it as the default search engine.

Step Three: Search From the Address Bar or New Tab Page

Now that you can type a search term into Edge’s address bar and press Enter. Your default search engine will be use to perform the search. If your search engine allows suggestions and you leave them turned on in Edge’s settings, Edge will even offer ideas from it in the drop-down box.

To quickly search with keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl+t to open a new tab page or Ctrl+L to focus the address bar on the current page and start typing your search.

eds 6Unsurprisingly, nothing outside of Microsoft Edge is impacted by this choice. When you choose “Search the web” during a search from the Start menu or through Cortana, Windows will use Bing to conduct the search. The above choice only applies to searches you start from within Microsoft Edge. After all, Cortana is “power by Bing.”

This, as usual, only affects the settings of one browser. You must manually change Internet Explorer’s search engine if you use it for legacy applications. There are default search choices for each browser, including Chrome, Firefox, and others.
