GCash is rolling out a new security feature that delivers one-time passwords (OTPs) directly within the app instead of via SMS.
SMS-based OTPs have long been one of the methods exploited by scammers. Phishing attempts and SIM-related attacks remain prevalent and are often used to gain unauthorized access to user accounts.
With the upcoming shift to in-app OTP delivery, these risks may be reduced.
OTPs will be sent through secure push notifications to the user’s authenticated GCash app, ensuring that only the account owner can receive and use the code.

The update is also expected to enable faster authentication, as users will no longer need to switch apps, manually enter codes, or wait for text messages.
GCash said in-app OTPs will work alongside existing security measures such as Know Your Customer (KYC) verification and facial recognition, adding another layer of protection without significantly affecting the user experience.

The GCash in-app OTP system is expected to be completely available by the first quarter of 2026.
