
Starting on July, Internet connectivity across the Philippines will be rolled out to give free access to Filipinos. This is as per announced by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Tuesday, through the project dubbed as ‘Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places’.
It is the government’s toil to enhance Internet accessibility for Filipinos to accelerate economic, social, educational opportunities and to reduce the growing Digital Divide.
The budget for this project increased to P1.408 billion from the original proposition of P339 million. And due to the increase in the budget, Class 3 municipalities will be added to the original list of Class 4, 5 and 6. Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed to:
The Project aims to serve 105, 000 concurrent users with 256 kbps each, which is the lowest prevailing speed requirement for ‘broadband’ service. A data volume based Fair Usage Policy shall also be implemented to promote an equitable distribution of the public service. Check out the official press release for more information.
