Epic Games filed Antitrust Complaint against Apple in Europe

The Epic Games – Apple fiasco is growing intense as days pass by. In recent developments, Epic has now filed an antitrust complaint this time against Cupertino with the European Commission. Epic Games has previously filed cases against Apple with the damages it has done in the US, Australia, and the UK however this time the new complaint is regarding fair access and competition for consumers and developers.

In a statement given by Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney says, “Consumers have the right to install apps from sources of their choosing and developers have the right to compete in a fair marketplace. We will not stand idly by and allow Apple to use its platform dominance to control what should be a level playing field.”

In their press release, Epic stated that Apple has “completely eliminated competition in-app distribution and payment processes” and “uses its control of the iOS ecosystem to benefit itself while blocking competitors.” Apple has now, which Epic Games claim, abused its position of dominance and is now in violation of EU fair competition laws.

This back-and-forth between Epic Games and Apple started last August when Epic had a server-side update. This resulted in users being allowed to get around Apple’s in-app purchases system whenever one is buying Fortnite’s V-Bucks in-game currency and uses Epic’s own payment system. This would then make Epic save 30% of Apple tax that was a direct violation of Apple’s App Store policy. Ultimately, Fortnite was banned in the App Store.
