Apple‘s previously announced leadership transition takes effect today, with Tim Cook moving to the role of executive chairman and John Ternus becoming the company’s new CEO.
The transition was first announced by Apple on April 20, 2026. At the time, the company said Cook would remain CEO through the summer before handing over the position to Ternus.
Cook has served as Apple’s CEO since 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs. He joined the company in 1998 and oversaw the expansion of Apple’s products and services, and grew the company’s market value from $350 billion to $4-5 trillion while quadrupling revenue to $416 billion.
Meanwhile, Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and became Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021. He has overseen hardware engineering work across several Apple product categories, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods.
As part of the transition, Ternus is also set to join Apple’s board of directors, while Arthur Levinson will become lead independent director.
