The Huawei P9 is as similar to the Mate 8 in paper, however, they differ in a few regions, such as in screen size and more importantly, battery capacity. The Huawei Mate 8 looks rather more premium rather than the Huawei P9 (seen from its renders).
It should be noted that the Huawei Mate 8 has a straight Kirin 955 while the Huawei P9 has a modified version of Kirin 955 though difference on the two chips isn’t exactly established yet.
