YouTube Custom Thumbnails Now Available on Shorts

YouTube is rolling out support for custom thumbnails on Shorts.

With the update, creators can now upload a custom thumbnail, similar to regular YouTube videos.

According to YouTube, custom thumbnails must still follow its Community Guidelines.

Thumbnails containing nudity, hate speech, violence, or harmful content may be removed, and repeated violations can lead to temporary loss of thumbnail upload privileges or account penalties.

For the best results, YouTube recommends using thumbnail images with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels (minimum width of 640 pixels), a 16:9 aspect ratio, and file formats such as JPG, PNG, or GIF. Thumbnail upload size limits vary depending on the device used.

The platform also introduced Ask Studio, an AI tool that can suggest thumbnail designs based on a video’s transcript and content.

Creators can ask the tool to create a thumbnail, select a specific video, and request changes such as making text larger before reviewing the generated suggestions.
