YouTube finally changed its rules about videos showing guns.
If a video displays homemade or automatic guns, or specific gun accessories, it will only be accessible to individuals aged 18 and older. Videos providing instructions on removing safety devices from guns are prohibited for all viewers, regardless of their age.
These rules specifically target real guns, not the ones in video games or movies. Certain educational videos, such as military training or news reports, may still be allowed.
YouTube says they made these changes because more people can make guns with 3D printers now. As per a report by Engadget, the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) raised worries about the video sharing platform suggesting violent gun videos to children. Their discovery involved creating accounts for kids and observing the videos recommended after watching video games.
The TTP is glad YouTube made these changes, but they say it needs to make sure they enforce these rules well. They think it’s a good step, but they’re not sure why it took so long. They want the platform to be careful and make sure younger viewers don’t see bad stuff about guns.
On June 18th, YouTube will implement new regulations on gun-related content to enhance the platform’s safety for young users while preserving educational opportunities. How do you feel about these changes, given their potential impact on younger viewers?
