What’s New With the vivo V80? A Look at Its Cameras and AI Features

vivo has built a strong reputation for its camera technology, especially with its V series, which focuses on portrait photography, selfies, and camera features for everyday use.

Now, before October ends, vivo has introduced the vivo V80 in the Philippines.

I’ve been exploring what the new phone has to offer, from its camera features to its design, to see how it performs in real-life use and whether it’s worth considering.

3D Stellar Design

The vivo V80 unit we received comes in Starwish Purple, a colorway with a galaxy-inspired design and Laser Holographic Lithography on the back.

When I first got the phone, I had fun looking at how its back changed depending on how I held it. Under the light, I could see tiny stars, glitter-like details, and different colors that created a subtle 3D effect. During the vivo V80 launch event, I also noticed a streak of pink glitter across the back, so I immediately took a photo of it.

Aside from its design, the vivo V80 features a cold-carved glass back and an aerospace-grade aluminum frame. These details give the phone a refined and premium feel. It’s the kind of phone I’d be happy to take out of my pocket and show to my friends, especially because of its unique design.

Personally, I really like the color and design since it fits my aesthetic, but for those who prefer a simpler look, the vivo V80 is also available in Wander Green, which has a darker green color and a matte finish.

50MP ZEISS Super Telephoto Camera

Daylight

Now, let’s take a look at the vivo V80’s daylight photography.

The bookshelf shot, taken at 23mm and 50mm, captured natural colors, soft lighting, and clear details. We can see here that the text on the book spines was still easy to read, and the lamp’s brass finish retained its texture.

For the iced matcha shot, the 23mm lens kept the drink in focus, with the green matcha, pink berry layer, and dark syrup remaining distinct.

Overall, the vivo V80 captured good details and natural colors in daylight. Here are some more sample photos taken using the phone.

Low-light

For low-light photography, take a look at the photos below.

The 73mm and 143mm shots separated the red lamp from the background well, although some edges looked a little too sharp.

The plastic syrup pumps were challenging because of their reflections. However, the vivo V80’s ZEISS coating helped reduce glare and unwanted reflections while keeping the details clear.

The spider web was also a good test for the camera because of its many small loops and threads. The fabric retained much of its texture instead of looking overly smooth or blurry.

Overall, the telephoto cameras are useful for taking close-up photos and capturing details from a distance even at lowlight.

ZEISS 85mm and 100mm ZEISS Center Stage Portraits

The vivo V series is also known for its portrait photography, and the vivo V80 continues this focus with its ZEISS co-engineered cameras.

In our indoor shots, the phone captured clear details and natural-looking skin tones while keeping the subject distinct from the busy background.

The neon signs retained their colors without appearing too bright, while the second photo showed good detail too despite the dim lighting and reflections on the glass.

Speaking of low-light photography, the vivo V80 also features CCD Flash Portrait, which aims to give portraits a more distinct look in darker settings.

CCD Flash Portrait

Now, let’s take a look at vivo’s CCD Flash Portrait feature, comparing two portrait shots taken at 50mm: the standard camera mode on the left and the CCD effect on the right.

The photo taken with the CCD effect has a more retro look, with better lighting on the subject and a darker background. It also keeps the pink top closer to its actual color.

Meanwhile, the standard photo keeps the warm atmosphere of the cafe, with softer lighting and shadows.

Overall, the CCD effect is a good option for those who prefer a retro, flash-photography look. The standard mode captures the ambient lighting more naturally, but the results may appear softer in low-light conditions.

Here are some sample photos taken using the vivo V80’s CCD Flash Portrait feature.

AI Creative Camera

The vivo V80’s AI Creative Camera is another useful tool for giving your photos a different look.

For example, when we were at a cafe, the plain white background felt a bit boring, so I tried the built-in AI feature and selected Sunlight. It added a different feel to the photo, making it look like we were sitting under the shade of trees on a sunny day.

There’s also a Retro effect, which I think works better for outdoor shots, especially on city streets at night, if you’re going for a new look.

Creative Sticker Collage

This is one of the features I enjoyed the most, and it may also be fun for those who like posting on social media.

It lets you turn your photos into fun collages with a more personal touch. For the samples below, I combined several photos from the same day into one image, making it easy to share different moments in a single post.

I also like how easy it is to turn objects in your photos into stickers and add them to your collage.

When I visited a flower shop café and a Halloween-themed café, for example, I created stickers of flowers and a spider, then combined them into one image. It was a simple way to capture the cafés’ vibe without having to look for matching images online.

OriginOS 7

Aside from the camera features, the vivo V80 also offers ways to personalize the phone through OriginOS 7.

One feature that caught my attention is Pet Pals, which adds virtual pets to the screen that move and interact with you.

It’s a cute little detail, especially for pet lovers who want to add more personality to their phone. Instead of having a plain wallpaper, you get a small companion that makes checking the time or unlocking your phone a bit more fun.

There are also other customization features, such as Wiggle, which adds motion effects to wallpapers, Glint, which gives them a shimmering look, and StickIt, which lets you decorate your screen with stickers.

These features may not change how the phone performs, but they offer more ways to make it feel personal. If you enjoy customizing your phone’s appearance, OriginOS 7 has a few playful options worth exploring.
