DESIGN

Let’s start with Vivo V11, it sets off glass sheen back along with an aluminum frame and curved edges. It measures 157.9 x 75 x 7.9 mm and weighs 156 g. The device is really slim but can easily be gripped. Similar to other recently released flagships, the smartphone has the infamous notch as well as thin bezels. In terms of its notch, it stood out due to its small size. The rear of the Vivo V11 that we have has the Starry Night back design variant.

The iPhone XS Max retains the familiar design of the iPhone X. That includes the large screen, almost no bezel around the edge, and ditched the home button. Going to its dimensions, the bigger 2018 iPhone measures 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7 mm and weighs 208 g. The iPhone XS Max is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance. It fits comfortably into the hand and the curved exterior is decent to hold. It is sandwiched into a glass which is said ‘specially formulated’ to reportedly give the strongest protection on a smartphone ever. The glass is made by Corning, which Apple has invested in. The iPhone XS Max comes in silver, space gray and gold.

Apple also offers a smaller version of the XS with a 5.85-inch (149 mm) OLED display called the iPhone XS.

Overall, both are convenient to hold. The iPhone XS Max is bigger than Vivo V11 but you can opt for the smaller variant, iPhone XS which has similar features. Its glass back also is vulnerable to cracking which you might reconsider if you are the sloppy type. Vivo V11’s design might be also overwhelming for some that prefer minimal details because of the curve and the sparkly dust at the back.

DISPLAY

The Vivo V11 features a 6.41″ Super AMOLED notched display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The device’s screen produced vibrant images credits to its Funtouch OS 4.5. The color also doesn’t change when viewed from different angles.

The iPhone XS Max features a 6.5-inch OLED display, with a resolution of 1242 x 2688 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and stainless-steel sides. The OLED panels in iPhone XS allow for an HDR display with the industry’s best color accuracy, true blacks, and remarkable brightness and contrast. According to Apple, they’re the sharpest displays, with the highest pixel density, on any Apple device. In this device also the Apple introduced the True Tone feature. It is a six-channel light sensor subtly adjusts the white balance onscreen to match the color temperature of the light around you. So images on the display look as natural as on a printed page and are easier on your eyes. But notice on our further review that this feature gave us yellow-ish tinge even on photos. This might be a downside for some who likes photos crisp and low saturated.

CAMERA

The iPhone XS Max has a lot to boast about its camera features. But since this is comparison review, we will try to focus what’s common in them and see which phone stood out.

Notice that the Apple iPhone XS Max has protruding camera that might be a downside for some users.

Phone Rear Camera  Front Camera
Vivo V11 12 MP (f/1.8, PDAF) + 5 MP (f/2.4), depth sensor 25 MP
Apple iPhone XS Max 12 MP, f/1.8, 26mm (wide), +
12 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (telephoto), 1/3.4″, 1.0µm, OIS, PDAF, 2x optical zoom
7 MP

Also, note that the iPhone XS Max and Vivo V11 has different lens width so the images we took has some discreet differences.

The better sensor and the new image processor on the A12 Bionic chip combine to enable what Apple calls “Smart HDR.” In practice, that means our photos should look better in low light and extreme contrast situations, making for better pictures whether shot on a nighttime street, in a dark bar or in bright sunlight.

When looking at the photos, the iPhone XS Max delivers more true to color natural looking images. Vivo 11 on the other hand, shows post-processed and more vibrant images with bright colors.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Vivo V11 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 along with an Adreno 512 GPU and an octa-core processor clocked up to 2.2 GHz. It came with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Concurrently, the newest iPhone XS Max is powered by Apple’s A12 Bionic, which is said to be 40% more powerful than last year’s chipset.  Aside from the new chipset, there’s Apple GPU (4-core graphics) coupled with 4GB of RAM and 3 storage options: 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The iPhone XS Max arrives with iOS 12 operating system, which was introduced last June.

When tested in heavy gaming, both were able to run in a High setting in PUBG. Both have shown a great level of detail but iPhone XS Max stood out for giving smoother frame transition.

SECURITY

The Face ID or Face Recognition is present on both handsets but the Vivo V11 pioneers the in-display fingerprint sensor technology that eliminates the need for a physical home button and leaves more room for the screen. Diving first on the iPhone, Apple says that it is more secure and faster than their previous model, this is quite true but it is still not the fastest and most-accurate Face ID.

BATTERY

Unsurprisingly, the Apple iPhone XS Max has a slightly smaller battery pack of 3174 mAh, the number on the iPhone might look ordinary but it is actually the largest battery pack Apple has put in a smartphone to date. The Vivo V1 is backed by a respectable 3,400mAh battery.

In our testing, the Vivo V11 took just 1 hour and 30 minutes to charge up the device from 15 percent to 100 percent and just 21 minutes to charge it up to 50 percent. On the other hand, the Apple iPhone XS Max took around an hour and 40 mins to fuel a dead-batt iPhone to 80%.

Some users reported problems regarding the iPhone XS Max’s charging. Apparently, some iPhones XS Max units won’t start charging with a Lightning cable. Their device fails to charge if it has been idle for a while and will only begin to charge if they have had their screen turned on. The issue was resolved on October 8, 2018, with the release of iOS 12.0.1.

AUDIO

The iPhone XS Max produces louder audio with its stereo speaker, also not scratchy even in maximum volume. The sound produced by Vivo V11 was loud enough even on medium volume. However, it sounded a bit shattered on maximum volume. As long as the volume is controlled, it provides a clear sound.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

The Vivo V11 is priced at PHP 19,999 and is available in two color variants – Starry Night and Nebula. The Apple iPhone XS is available in three color variants: Gold, Silver, and Space Gray. For the pricing, consumers have three options as well: 64GB model for PHP 74,990, 256GB for PHP 84,490, and lastly, 512GB with the exorbitant price tag of PHP 97,490.
