The patent for the foldable smartphone was filed by Samsung Electronics on May 29, 2017 which caused rumors that it would be released in the same year. However, the patent was officially published last Thursday, February 15, 2018, by WIPO, the World Intellectual Property.

The company has already shown two foldable smartphones this year during the CES 2018 to a number of people where one of the devices is said to have a fold-in design whereas the other one folds out. There are also reports that the release of the device may fall on November 2018 but this is still not confirmed.

In order to avoid the complications faced by the current design such as a damaged display due to tensile force and compressive force in both folded and unfolded state, Samsung came up with a formation that will support the display where it curves. According to the diagrams, the company will be using a hinge system that will aid in preventing damage from the two mentioned forces. Furthermore, it will also help in preventing the display from getting damaged by keeping the radius of curvature at a set value according to Gizmochina.

Due to the hinge system, the device can also be folded into various angles revealing room for potential for this means that the phone is not limited to just two positions. This feature could be useful and very convenient to future users of the foldable smartphone.
