Design
At a first hold of the handsets, weight is the probably the first thing you will notice with The J7 Plus being significantly heavier than the OnePlus 5. Edges are also sharper on the OnePlus 5 compared to the bulkier feel of the J7 Plus. Both phones also have rounded corners and a and a matte back finish.
The physical home button on the J7 Plus is sandwiched by two capacitive keys compared to the OnePlus 5 which has 2 backlit capacitive keys and a solid state home button. Both phones are also nearly at the same length and width being only noticeably different in thickness.
Display
Both smartphones are also at 5.5 inches and at 1080p resolution with a Super AMOLED for the J7 Plus and an Optical AMOLED for the OnePlus 5. Differences in display quality are noticeable specially when watching videos or playing video games. Due note that some OnePlus 5 units exhibit what they call the “jelly effect” which luckily we didn’t encounter.
Camera
Differences on camera specs are significant even on resulting shots. With the J7 Plus having a Dual 13 and 5 MP rear camera and a dual 16 and 20 MP rear camera for the OnePlus 5. The J7 Plus may not have the same camera specs as the OnePlus 5 but it’s still capable of producing photos in great detail although losing clarity when it comes to using the optical zoom. Colors are also more vibrant on the OnePlus 5 compared to the less saturated hue of the J7 Plus. Differences on HDR shots are much more noticeable on the J7 Plus especially on darker shots compared to the OnePlus 5 with very little difference but still visible. Live focus shots on the OnePlus 5 works perfectly even at a close distance as opposed to the J7 Plus which needs to be at least 3 feet away from the subject also creating a veil or halo around the focus.
Front Camera specs may seem at par on paper with 16MP front camera for both phones, but results say otherwise. Selfies on the OnePlus 5 produce sharper and detailed photos compared to the J7 Plus, which is less saturated than the latter, either way front camera shots are still fairly decent on both. Video recording on the OnePlus 5 has 4k capabilities on 30 fps, and 60 for lower resolutions and great stabilization. The J7 Plus on the other hand can go up to 1080p with 30 fps.
