In the world of extended reality (XR), Qualcomm has just unleashed its latest creation, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. After a collaborative effort with Samsung and Google on a groundbreaking XR project announced a year ago, this upgraded chip has finally hit the scene.
The new XR2+ Gen 2 is like the upgraded version of its sibling, the XR2 Gen 2 in Meta Quest 3. With loads of improvements, it’s poised to compete head-to-head with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
What sets the XR2+ Gen 2 apart? A 4.3K resolution per eye and a 90fps refresh rate. This marks a substantial leap from the XR2 Gen 2’s 3K resolution, promising users a crisper and more captivating virtual reality experience.
But that’s not all! The XR2+ Gen 2 flexes its muscles in the tracking department. With the capability to handle up to 12 cameras and a robust on-device AI, VR headsets equipped with this chip can precisely track user movements and surroundings. The result? A more natural and seamless navigation and interaction in the virtual realm.
Qualcomm didn’t stop there; they’ve supercharged the processing power. The XR2+ Gen 2 boasts a 15% boost in GPU frequency and a 20% increase in CPU frequency compared to its forerunner, ensuring top-notch performance and the ability to tackle even the most demanding VR applications.
To fast-track VR headset development, Qualcomm joined forces with Goertek to create a cutting-edge reference design. This pre-built platform comes in two flavors – one fueled by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 for 3K resolution and another powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 for the full 4K experience.
Excitingly, Qualcomm has spilled the beans that the new Snapdragon silicon will be the powerhouse behind upcoming XR products from tech giants Samsung and Google. Not stopping there, Qualcomm has also teamed up with at least five other hardware maestros, including HTC, to introduce this new platform to a broader audience.
