Opensignal’s August 2022 report contained some interesting findings on 5G connectivity in 11 cities across the APAC region. Seoul leads with 453.1Mbps, while Metro Manila is at 150.7Mbps. This puts Manila ahead of Hong Kong (137Mbps) and just behind Tokyo (163Mbps).
Compared to WiFi, 5G speeds in the Philippines this 2022 are better than those in some scenarios in OpenSignal’s previous report.

On the other hand, Metro Manila beat Tokyo when it comes to uploading speeds, with 14.4Mbps compared to 11.9Mbps. With its 52.8Mbps upload speeds, Kuala Lumpur beats Seoul, with 40.6Mbps upload speeds.
Although Seoul is still ranked as the leading city regarding 5G connectivity, Kuala Lumpur also ranked high because it only launched a commercial 5G network in May 2022. Malaysia’s wholesale 5G network has very few users and a low load compared to other major cities in APAC.

In Opensignal’s 5G test period between April 1 and June 29, Metro Manila scored 71.6 points, more than three points ahead of Tokyo for the 5G video, which was tested from April 1 to June 29. Metro Manila scored 66.6 points in gaming, almost 9 points behind Tokyo.

The Opensignal report points out that Metro Manila has 7.3 download speed improvements compared to 4G. At the same time, Metro Manila’s users experience a whopping 54% increase in video quality when using 5G connectivity. Compared to watching videos over a 4G connection, Metro Manila users experience a whopping 54% improvement.

The availability of 5G in Metro Manila still needs to be improved despite all the benefits of 5G connectivity. According to Opensignal, the APAC region is still working out its 5G rollout, with Seoul topping the charts with 43.4% coverage. Compared to Singapore’s 18.6%, the Philippines is at 18.2% coverage.
The Philippines is steadily improving its 5G connectivity in 2022, but coverage is still lagging.
