NTC Mandates Live Selfies for SIM Registration

A memo order from the National Telecommunications Commission says that telco customers must submit live selfie shots when they register their SIM cards.

Ella Blanca Lopez, the commissioner of the NTC, told a Senate committee that public telecommunications companies have three months to install technologies that will need live pictures.

The memo, according to Lopez, was sent to clean up the roster because some people who signed up used fake IDs and stock photos because the telcos didn’t have a database to match them.

Lopez said PTEs have until December 18, 2023, to put in place technologies that will make sure users can only use live selfies when you register and not stock photos.

All PTEs are required by the SIM Card Registration Act to set up their own registration sites so that users with valid ID cards can sign up.
