Two of the budget-oriented phones from Huawei’s sub-brand, Nova, are finally here, and they are competitively priced and specced as well. The Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro follow the footsteps of the Nova 7 and 7 Pro, released last April. Based on the features, this may be the biggest leap by far from Nova.

At the core of the two performance devices is the Kirin 985 chipset based on a 7nm process node. It already comes with a 5G modem, so you shouldn’t have any problem accessing 5G-enabled areas for faster mobile data speeds. However, access to Google apps and support is still limited. Furthermore, the devices are running on EMUI 11 based on Android 10, not Android 11.

Camera-wise, you’re looking at the same quad-camera setup that features a 64MP f1.9 sensor, 8MP ultrawide, and a pair of 2MP lenses for depth and macro. On the front is a 32MP selfie camera in a pinhole cutout. Apparently, you can record up to 4K resolution, which is typically found on high-end devices.

The differences between the Nova 8 and 8 Pro come down to the size of the display and battery. Due to the smaller 6.57″ display, Nova 8 also houses a smaller 3800mAh battery. As opposed to the Nova 8 Pro with 4000mAh and 6.72″ display. However, both support Nova’s fastest 66W commercially-available charger. There’s almost no difference in the display quality as both feature 1 billion colors with HDR10, 120Hz (90Hz for 8), and curved edge technologies.

Nova 8 Pro, however, does come with the extra 32MP ultrawide selfie as seen from the pill-shaped cutout.

Both the Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro are on track for the December 30th sale in China, with several colors to choose from — black, purple, green, and gradient white. Each has two models, featuring 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB pairings. Nova 8 comes with a price of CNY 3,299(~Php24,200) and CNY 3,699(~Php27,200), while the Nova 8 Pro goes for CNY 3,999(~Php29,400) and CNY 4,399(~Php32,300)

Nova 7 and Nova 7 SE are available for purchase locally and has met success since their respective launch. That said, we might see the Nova 8 duo as early as March if we’re to be optimistic.
