It’s finally time for some camera comparison action between Asus’ top notch optical zoom shooter, the Zenfone Zoom and Nokia’s flagship camera shooter, the Lumia 1020. Which among these two high-end shooters is better in the overall camera test. Let’s all find out.

First off is the Lumia 1020, the 41MP PureView shooter is renowned as one of the best shooters of its time and even today. It’s f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens should be a worthy foe against the 13MP laser autofocus-equipped optical zoom shooter, the Zenfone Zoom.

In our test shots, the Lumia 1020 showed brighter images though it lacks HDR mode. In terms of detail, the Lumia 1020 trumps the Zenfone Zoom in standard, non-zoomed modes. The photos from the former are noticeably sharper and have higher detail preservation.
Optical Zoom vs Digital Zoom
In zoomed mode, the Zenfone Zoom shots produced more saturated or vivid images. But the ghosting level is stronger on its shots.
HDR Shots (High Dynamic Range)
Noise control was pretty much on par between the two competing handsets.
It seems that on night shooting, the Pureview-equipped outputs were slightly better with its more neutral white balance and impressive low light capability.
The Asus Zenfone Zoom has more detailed selfie shots using its 5MP front-facing camera. On the other hand, the Lumia 1020 takes brighter selfies with its 1.2MP camera.
It’s a battle of digital zoom and optical zoom in video mode. The Lumia 1020 has slightly sharper video when zoomed-in than the Optical Zoom of Zenfone. But in terms of color, the Zoom has more vivid output.
Overall, the Lumia 1020 camera managed to produce decent output and at par with Zoom in some areas. Nevertheless, despite being an older shooter, the Lumia 1020 almost gave the Asus Zenfone Zoom a run for its money with its camera quality.
