WhatsApp has announced several new calling features.
Users can now make and receive one-on-one and group calls through a web browser without downloading the desktop app.
The web version also supports features such as screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab, call history, and favorites. Calls remain end-to-end encrypted and are free to use.
Another new feature allows users to transfer an ongoing group call between devices. For example, a call started on a smartphone or tablet can be moved to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app without disconnecting.
WhatsApp is also introducing a waiting room for group calls. When creating a call link, users can enable a “Require approval to join” option, allowing participants to wait until they are approved by the host before entering the call.
The platform has also added QuickHD, which provides high-definition video earlier during the start of a call, reducing the wait for better video quality.
In addition, a new noise suppression feature helps reduce background noise during calls, making voices clearer in noisy environments. The setting can be turned on or off during a call.
According to WhatsApp, these features are rolling out gradually and will become available to all users in the coming weeks.
