Apple has introduced two new Apple silicon chips, the M6, which will power the new Mac mini, and the M5 Ultra, designed for the new Mac Studio.
The M6 is Apple’s first chip built on a 2nm process. It features a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. It supports up to 32GB of unified memory and up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth.
Apple says the M6 delivers up to 1.2x faster multithreaded performance than the M5 and up to 2.4x faster performance than the M1. Its Neural Engine can also provide up to twice the peak compute of previous generations for on-device AI tasks.
Meanwhile, the M5 Ultra is Apple’s most powerful M-series chip to date. It uses a new quad-die design that combines two dual-die M5 Max chips through UltraFusion technology.
The M5 Ultra comes with up to a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU, along with a 32-core Neural Engine. It supports up to 512GB of unified memory and up to 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth.
Apple says the M5 Ultra delivers up to 1.3x higher multithreaded CPU performance and up to 40 percent faster graphics performance than the M3 Ultra. Its GPU also includes Neural Accelerators for AI workloads.
