Meta is planning to establish a local office in the Philippines.
Previosuly, we shared that the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) is studying whether to recommend blocking Facebook in the Philippines due to the harmful content on the social media app.
According to NBI Director Melvin Matibag, the Meta office would give Philippine authorities a direct point of contact when reporting posts that may pose a threat or need to be removed.
On the other hand, Meta has also agreed to provide information to Philippine authorities to help address online threats.
Additionally, the government is also working on a possible system that would allow Meta to verify users through the Philippine Identification System.
The proposed system would allow Meta to send identification details to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which would only confirm whether the information matches its records.
