MediaTek has solidified its position as the top-notch chipmaker of 2023, seizing the crown in the fiercely competitive realm of smartphone technology. Boasting the title of the most popular System-on-Chip (SoC).

Their claim to fame lies in crafting the fastest smartphone processor to date, with the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 leading the pack.

According to a fresh Canalys report, MediaTek flexed its dominance by selling a whopping 117 million chipsets in the last quarter of 2023, outpacing Apple’s 78 million and Qualcomm’s 69 million units.

Big players like Google, Samsung, and Unisoc also made their mark in the smartphone SoC market. MediaTek’s smartphone chipset shipments saw a substantial 21% year-on-year growth, reaching a staggering $23 billion.

However, when it comes to revenue, Apple emerged as the undisputed leader, raking in a whopping $87 billion. Qualcomm also surpassed MediaTek with shipments worth $30 billion in 2023.

Surprisingly, the report revealed a 2% dip in Qualcomm’s SoC shipment revenue from the previous year, while Samsung witnessed a significant 44% decline in earnings from its Exynos chips.

Xiaomi stood out as a major buyer of Qualcomm chipsets, accounting for 25% of shipments. Meanwhile, Huawei made a remarkable comeback in 2023, recording a jaw-dropping 5,121% improvement with 7 million units shipped and revenue of $7 billion, driven by its new Kirin SoCs.

Unisoc also showed promise with a 24% YoY revenue growth at $3 billion and 27 million units shipped. Notably, Google seemed to struggle in the SoC shipments arena, with estimated revenue at $2 billion and 3 million units moved, potentially linked to the niche nature of its Tensor chipsets exclusively designed for Pixel phones.

What new surprises will the tech world unveil in the coming year?
