Now that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and Pro Max are out, we can finally see the changes Apple made to its base variant to make it a better successor. Let’s take a look at what’s new with the iPhone 17.
The first small change is in its build quality and dimensions. The difference isn’t that big, but it did add some numbers compared to its predecessor. The iPhone 17 is slightly thicker and heavier at 7.95mm and 177g, compared to the iPhone 16’s 7.8mm thickness and 173g weight.

One of the biggest upgrades comes in the display. Previously, you had to go for the Pro version to experience a fast refresh rate, but now it’s available on the base model.
The iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display, slightly larger than the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch OLED screen. It also boasts a higher resolution of 1206×2622, a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. In comparison, the iPhone 16 offered 1176×2556 resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, and up to 2,000 nits of brightness.

Additionally, Apple has upgraded the screen protection from Ceramic Shield Glass to the new Ceramic Shield 2.
In the camera department, the iPhone 16 came with a 48MP main shooter, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 12MP selfie camera. The iPhone 17, on the other hand, retains the 48MP main sensor but upgrades the ultrawide to 48MP and the selfie camera to 18MP.

For performance and software, the most notable change is the inclusion of the new A19 chipset, designed to be more efficient and optimized for sustained performance.
Both models still come with 8GB of RAM, but the iPhone 17 starts with a larger 256GB base storage option.

Battery capacity has also increased slightly, with the iPhone 17 packing 3,692mAh compared to the iPhone 16’s 3,561mAh. Charging is faster as well, with support for 40W wired charging versus 20W on the previous model.
As for pricing, the iPhone 16 launched at PHP54,990 for the 128GB model.
On the other hand, the iPhone 17 is priced at PHP57,990 for the 256GB variant.

With the small price difference, the iPhone 17 is the more practical choice, offering a smoother display, a more powerful chipset, and double the storage.
Those are the key changes Apple has made to the iPhone 17. What are your thoughts on the upgrades? Share them with us in the comments below.
