Instagram to Remove End-to-End Encrypted Direct Messages

Instagram will stop supporting end-to-end encrypted messages and calls.

End-to-end encryption means that only the sender and receiver of a message or call can see or hear its contents.

Not even Meta can access these messages. Each device in an encrypted chat uses a special key to lock and unlock messages. While messages shared outside the encrypted chat are all seen or heard by others.

Users with affected chats will receive instructions on how to download any media or messages they want to keep. For those who are using the older versions of the app, keep in mind that Instagram may need to be updated before downloads can be done.

The Instagram end-to-end encrypted messages and calls will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.
