Google’s Pixels can now check your Heart and Respiratory Rate

We are truly living in the future! With new innovations being developed every day, our lives have been comfortable and more efficient. And it seems that life would be even a breeze with Google planning to add some new features in their Pixel smartphones.

Google will be adding a heart rate and respiratory rate monitoring system in their devices specifically Pixel phones. For heart rate monitoring, all you need to do is place your finger on the rear camera. The tracking color then changes as your blood flows through your fingertips.

When it comes to respiratory rate monitoring, the user would need to use the selfie camera. You need to position yourself within the frame and breathe. From thereon, the software would monitor the rise and fall of your chest. According to a Google Health product manager, this is the same way how doctors monitor their patient’s breathing rate and the company says that the software is trying to mimic the same technique.

The Google PM stated that “A lot of people, especially in disadvantaged economic classes right now, don’t have things like wearables, but would still really benefit from the ability to be able to track their breathing rate, heart rate, et cetera.”

The respiratory rate feature was accurate within one breath per minute, according to Google, and works in both with or without health conditions. The feature was also tested to different skin tones which were accurate with 2%.

As of now, Google is planning to add and test the feature on Pixel phones and is still conducting researches if this is applicable to non-Pixel phones in the future.
