GCash Goes Global

After receiving permission from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to launch the service, Ayala-backed GCash can now enable the use of international SIM cards for its services abroad.

In a statement, GCash said that the central bank had given the green light for the beta launch of GCash Overseas.

Filipinos in Japan, Australia, and Italy can now sign up for a mobile wallet even if they don’t have a Philippine SIM card.

Sazon says that 76 million people have signed up to use GCash.

GCash said that only the first 1,000 people from Japan, Australia, and Italy with an international SIM card could use the mobile wallet during the beta launch.

Filipinos living abroad can sign up for GCash once fully verified. They can use it to send money to their families back home, pay bills, or buy load credits.

The beta mode will only be available for a limited time, according to GCash. The full launch is expected to happen later this year.

With its partnership with the global payments platform Alipay+, the mobile wallet said it has also been stepping up its efforts to expand internationally.

Aside from GCash Overseas, the mobile wallet said users can now use it to pay in select stores in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Qatar, as well as in top European countries like the UK, France, Germany, and Italy.
