Gatchalian Urges the Formation of a National Online Library

Senator Win Gatchalian pleads with the government to create free online libraries for Filipino primary and secondary school kids.

The senator thinks digital tools will benefit students even once face-to-face instruction resumes since they can fill the vacuum left by sporadic disruptions to school.

The Philippine Online Library Act (Senate Bill No. 477) requires the DepEd to digitize all the textbooks necessary for public education. Additionally, the Department of Education must give students electronic devices like laptops and PCs so they can access the online course materials more efficiently.

For the benefit of instructors and students in 2020, during the height of the global health crisis, several governmental organizations and academic institutions have already established online library services.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Department of Education would oversee and maintain the planned Philippine Online Library (DepEd).
