Have you been spending too much time surfing the Internet? Or have you caught yourself staring mindlessly on your phone, just scrolling on your social media account? Well, according to a recent study, we, Filipinos, have might be spending our time too much virtually.
In a recent study conducted by We Are Social and Hootsuite, Filipinos would spend an average of 4 hours and 15 minutes each day on social media. Comparing with the 2020’s data, this is a 22-minute jump from the 3 hours and 53 minutes Filipinos are online.
By contrast, the global average of social media usage was 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Although with the current situation of the Philippines when it comes to lack of speed and reliability of the Internet, the country still holds the lead in daily time spent using the internet. The data shows that an average of 10 hours and 56 minutes is spent online. This is an increase comparing to last year’s numbers which were 9 hours and 45 minutes.
In contrast, the global average for internet usage was 6 hours and 54 minutes, the companies noted.
Also, the adoption of e-commerce grew tremendously in the country with 80.2 percent from last year’s 76 percent, according to the research.
We Are Social and Hootsuite noted that the global average which was 76.8 percent and 74 percent with the previous year. This is also the second time around where the Philippines’ figure is above the global average.
The rise in social media, internet, and e-commerce usage was done after Ookla Speedtest Global Index indicated a 14-notch jump when it comes to the Philippines’ ranking in mobile internet connection speed, stated the two companies.
It also compared the country’s internet speed stating that December 2020 registered 22.50 megabits per second compared to November 2020 which had 18.49 Mbps
