DICT Targets Doubling Free Wi-Fi Sites in 2024

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has set its sights on doubling the number of free Wi-Fi sites across the country this year, according to an announcement made on Wednesday.

As part of the broader initiative, the Marcos administration’s Broadband ng Masa Program (BBMP) strives to provide internet connectivity to geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas nationwide.

DICT Undersecretary David Almirol Jr. revealed that there were approximately 25,000 free Wi-Fi sites by the end of 2023. The move aligns with the e-LGU program, a collaborative effort by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), DICT, and the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA). The program aims to enhance connectivity, with efforts being coordinated simultaneously.

Almirol emphasized the plan to double the number of free Wi-Fi sites, particularly in Local Government Units (LGUs) requiring enhanced connectivity, in order to effectively implement the e-LGU program.

Increasing the number of free Wi-Fi sites is expected to bolster the government’s e-LGU program, facilitating the digitalization of processes such as business licenses and occupancy permits.
