CICC Studying Possible Facebook Ban in PH

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) is studying whether to recommend blocking Facebook in the Philippines.

In an interview with DZMM Teleradyo, CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso said the government has the technical capability to block an entire social media platform.

He said the move is being considered not only because of information and misinformation concerns, but also to strengthen the protection of children.

Additionally, Usec. Paraiso acknowledged that a platform ban would have social and political costs. However, he said the possibility of blocking a platform is being considered to encourage social media companies operating in the Philippines to comply with local laws and government requests, which he believes is only fair for platforms doing business in the country.

The CICC will also conduct a study to develop stronger guidelines for social media platforms, similar to the measures it previously pursued with Roblox, which he said eventually complied with the guidelines.
