That’s right. China is looking to start its research on 6G with two incredibly large teams to boot. China’s Ministry of Science and Technology isn’t looking to replace 5G anytime soon, instead, it’s preparing for the inevitable need for a better and faster network platform.

As mentioned, there will be two teams to start off the research effort — the first group will focus on the use cases for 6G and will be handled by China’s government, while the second group is going to consist of 37 combined entities of universities, research institutes, and enterprises, and it will lay out the technical foundation of 6G. This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about the potential successor of 5G. Huawei already confirmed last September that they are working on 6G. The same goes for Qualcomm, lending a hand to provide contributions and drive technological progress forward.

As of 2019, 5G is still in its early years. Only China and South Korea have the widest support for 5G connectivity, while the US is limited to select states. That said, 5G is still expected to dominate the mobile world in the next 10 years.
