Asus ZenFone 5Z vs Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium: Specs Comparison

The Asus ZenFone 5Z was first introduced during the Mobile World Congress 2018 and was launched here in the Philippines this April. As for the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, the smartphone will launch next month in the U.S.

The two smartphones have numerous similarities in terms of hardware. Both are powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor. The question is, which of them is worth buying more? Let’s find out here.

Asus ZenFone 5Z and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium similarities

In terms of display, the Asus ZenFone 5Z seems to have the larger screen with a 6.2″ IPS LCD display whereas the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium has a 5.8″ IPS LCD display. In addition, the Asus ZenFone 5Z has a notched display. Although the Asus device has the larger screen, the Xperia smartphone contains a better resolution, 3840 x 2160 pixels. Meanwhile, the ZenFone 5Z has a resolution of 1080 x 2246. The two are also protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass. Unlike the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium which is supported by Gorilla Glass 5, the Asus ZenFone 5Z is only supported by Gorilla Glass 3.

Under the hood, the two smartphones are both powered by the Snapdragon 845 along with an Adreno 630 GPU. They differ in terms of storage options. The Asus ZenFone 5Z contains 6GB of RAM and 128/256GB of internal storage. On the other hand, the Xperia XZ2 Premium only has one storage option, 6GB RAM + 64GB internal storage. Both of their storages are expandable through a microSD card.

In terms of their camera setup, the two smartphones feature dual rear lenses. The Asus ZenFone 5Z sports a dual 12MP + 8MP rear camera whereas the Xperia device sports a 19MP + 12MP dual main camera. As for their front camera, the Asus smartphone has an 8MP lens and the Sony device has a 13MP lens. Looking solely at the specs, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium seems to sport the better camera. However, to fully determine which of the two has a better camera, we would have to do a camera comparison.

As for the battery, the Xperia smartphone has the bigger battery with 3540mAh whereas the ZenFone 5Z has a 3300mAh battery. Both smartphones are supported by Fast charging.

An additional feature that the Sony Xperia smartphone has that the Asus device doesn’t is its waterproof feature and wireless charging. On the other hand, the Asus ZenFone 5Z sports DTX Headphone X.
