Spyware Infects Apple Devices Due to New Vulnerability

Digital watchdog group Citizen Lab said Thursday that they had found ransomware connected to the Israeli company NSO that took advantage of a new vulnerability in Apple products.

Citizen Lab said in a statement that it found the flaw had been used to install NSO’s Pegasus spyware on the Apple device of a worker at a civil society group in Washington, D.C., when it looked at it last week.

Citizen Lab didn’t give any more information about the person or group that was affected.

A cybersecurity group said the flaw let hackers take over iPhones with the latest version of iOS (16.6) without the target having to do anything.

Apple fixed the bugs that Citizen Lab found by putting out new software patches for its devices. A representative for Apple said the company had nothing else to say, while Citizen Lab told people to update their devices.

The NSO said it had nothing to say about the Citizen Lab study right now.

The Israeli company has been on a blacklist by the U.S. government since 2021 because it is said to have done bad things, like spying on media and government officials.
