Amazon Increases Free Shipping Minimums

Amazon has been quietly raising the amount some customers have to spend on its site to get free shipping.

Some Amazon users who don’t have a Prime membership now have to spend $35 (PHP2000) instead of $25 (PHP1400) to get free shipping.

A spokesperson for Amazon, Kristina Pressentin, revealed that the company is testing the new qualification. The change won’t affect Prime members who pay $14.99 (PHP850) a month, or $139 (PHP8000) a year, for free shipping and other benefits.

The new $35 minimum seems to apply to people based on where they live. Among other places, it said that the minimum order in Seattle, where Amazon is based, is $25, while non-Prime customers in nearby Bellevue have to pay $35 to get free shipping.

The online retail giant is trying to cut costs in all parts of its business, including this one. In the past year, the company has cut more than 27,000 executive jobs and shut down parts of its business that were not making money.

This year, it stopped giving Prime users who spent less than $150 free grocery delivery.
