The Brazilian Ministry of Justice halted iPhone sales until Apple again included charging cables in their product packaging.
As of the launching of the iPhone 12, the government has issued an order and imposed a fine on the tech business for selling cellphones without a charger.
The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) has argued that selling the phones without chargers are the same as selling an incomplete product
In a release uploade on its website, the MJSP explained: “The sale of iPhone cell phones unaccompanie by battery chargers has been suspend throughout the national territory.
The registration of the brand’s handsets with Anatel was cancele beginning with the iPhone12 model, and Apple Computer Brasil was fine R $12,275,500 (approximately ₱690 million) by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP).
The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) filed a lawsuit against Apple in December 2018 for selling iPhones without the proper charger, prompting the company to halt device sales temporarily.
“The chargers are tying, selling an incomplete product or lacking essential functionality, refusing to sell a complete product through discrimination against the consumer and transferring responsibility to third parties,” the MJSP said.
Apple is believe to have claimed that the choice not to include chargers was out of ‘environmental concern to encourage sustainable consumption. But Senacon argue the duty of procuring a charger was then pushe to the user.
The government has informed the relevant parties of the suspension via formal letters. It has warned Apple that it may be labele a “repeat offender” if it continues to sell iPhones without charging cables.
The MJSP has warned that if this behavior persists, the corporation may be subject to “additional, even more, severe punishments.”
Reuters adds that Apple immediately responded by saying it would appeal the suspension and would continue working with the Brazilian consumer protection regulator Senacon during the appeal process.
Several Brazilian courts have ruled in Apple’s favor on this issue, and the company is sure its users know the many charging and connection methods available.
