
Xiaomi Corp assesses the reasons for an Italian regulator’s fine of €3.2 million (₱180 Million), as the company has always adhered to local rules and regulations.
In Italy, the company’s local business charged customers after confirming the quality of its products. However, it should take a closer look at potential flaws and accept returns without charging freight and inspection fees.
Despite being aware of the fine, Xiaomi said it was examining its reasons. According to the Beijing-based company, after-sales service is one of the company’s top priorities.
A consumer authority in Italy accused Xiaomi of violating several consumer laws when fixing defects. Xiaomi’s local unit refused to carry out repairs due to minor defects not covered by the warranty, such as small scratches, according to a telecom industry news website called Mobile World Live.
Xiaomi shipped 19.7% of smartphones in Europe in the first quarter, and its market share in Western Europe was 15.4%, according to Canalys.
Additionally, the company will work to enhance its product and brand portfolio to strengthen its operator channels, develop its retail operation capabilities, and increase its market share.
The Italy Competition Authority has imposed various fines since 2020 on Apple, Amazon, Samsung, and Google. Amazon has declared it will appeal the fine, which amounts to $1.14 billion (almost ₱80 Billion).
