YouTube is making significant changes to its auto dubbing feature aimed at improving how multilingual videos are experienced by both viewers and creators.
The improvements include Increased language support, realistic translated audio, viewer controls, and better creator-side management of dubbed content.
The auto dubbing feature currently supports 27 different languages and is available across YouTube. The platform also reported that millions of viewers watched auto-dubbed videos on a daily average.
The new Expressive Speech enables audio translation that retains the original speaker’s emotional delivery and tone when translated. This is intended to make dubbed speech sound closer to the creator’s natural voice style. Expressive Speech is supported in eight languages: English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Meanwhile, Preferred Language setting allows viewers to have direct control over how dubbed audio is played and allows users to manually choose their preferred language or select the original audio when available.
Additionally, YouTube is also testing a Lip Sync technology that modifies a speaker’s lip movements to better match translated audio tracks. It primarily aims to make dubbed videos appear more visually aligned with spoken dialogue.
