As expected, Xiaomi Mi 5c launches together with the company’s own Surge S1 SoC or previously known as Pinecone. What we did not expect is its cheaper cost.
Once it goes on sale in China on March 3, the Mi 5c will officially retail at 1500yuan or almost Php11,000($218). Perhaps, the reason why it’s lower is because of the proprietary chipset. But we’ll get into that later.
At that price, you are going to get a 5.15-inch 1080p display that is built on a metal unibody design.
You also get to play with Xiaomi’s very own MIUI based on Android Marshmallow BUT the company said that it’s upgradable to Nougat as early as March.
The camera stacks a 12MP f/2.2 with LED flash for the main snapper and an 8MP f/2.0 with 27mm wide-angle lens for the selfie shooter.
Keeping you connected will be a 2860mAh battery with support for 9V/2A fast charging via the USB Type-C port.
What keeps the Mi 5c special is Xiaomi’s first gen in-house chipset – Surge S1. The 28nm process-based contains an octa-core CPU clocked at 1.4GHz that goes up to 2.2GHz. This is, of course, to be paired with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
Xiaomi, as a third player manufacturing its own chipset behind Samsung and Huawei, already provided synthetic benchmarks to let us know what its newest chipset is capable of.

However, we would still like to test this one on our own real-world performance.
