While all eyes are set on Sony’s flagship lineup – the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs, the company also announced their “affordable” mid-range tier and the successor to the XA series.
Meet the Sony Xperia XA1 and Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra that aim to meet all your photography needs.

As usual in Sony smartphones, the latest XA lineup is constructed in an aluminum body with a squarish layout. To make it more premium looking, Sony boasts its borderless design that stretches to the sides of the phones.
If you are looking for a compact smartphone but with respectable specs, you are better off with the Xperia XA1 with its 5.0-inch size.
But if you don’t mind using both your hands, you will enjoy more the 6.0-inch display size of the Xperia XA1 Ultra.
Not only the size difference will impact your viewing pleasures, as the bigger sibling sports a 1080p resolution in contrast to the 720p display of the smaller model.
The modest display for the XA1 actually makes sense since it uses a meager 2300mAh battery capacity compared to the 2700mAh for the XA1 Ultra.
The mid-range lineup aims to get the photography lovers out there as you can fully take advantage of the 23MP rear snapper with Exmor image sensor for a better low-light quality of up to ISO 6400.
If selfie is the name of the game, the Xperia XA1 Ultra’s 16MP front facing camera comes with its own LED flash and with support for Optical Image Stabilization, just in case you are fond of broadcasting your face.
Both are utilizing a MediaTek Helio P20 chipset with 3GB RAM for the XA1 and 4GB RAM for the XA1 Ultra. Both again, starts with 32GB expandable storage via the microSD card slot.
Sony Xperia XA1 will start rolling out on May 1 for a price of $299.99 or Php15,000 while the XA1 Ultra is slated for release around late Spring with no official price yet.
For some reason, Sony did not add a fingerprint sensor for the mid-range lineup considering its hefty price tag but this might change one it goes official in other regional markets.
