During Samsung’s Annual Tech Day, the company has announced its latest Exynos 990 flagship chipset for smartphones. The new chipset will enter mass production by the end of 2019, and it’s likely to power the supposed Galaxy S11 Series. Some main features of Exynos 990 are 7nm process, LPDDR5 RAM, up to 108MP individual sensor, and up to 8K video recording.

While most active Samsung followers expected the company to release a mobile chipset with AMD Radeon graphics, the Exynos 990 still brings significant improvements in CPU, GPU, and AI.

In the CPU side, Samsung is still using three clusters — 2 high-performing cores, 2 performing cores, and 4 efficient cores. Interestingly, the company did not reveal its clock speeds. The two cores made for the most strenuous tasks are Exynos M5 that offers 20% more performance. As for the middle cores and efficient cores, they are the Cortex A76 and Cortex A55, respectively. Samsung is claiming there’s an overall 13% improvement from the three clusters.

In terms of graphics, it’s said that the GPU is one of the biggest upgrades — using the new Valhall architecture that promises up to 20% boost in performance or/and power efficiency. The mobile GPU is Mali G77MP11 but with undisclosed clock speed. Furthermore, Exynos 990 is using LPDDR5 memory now. This means the 2093MHz speed has jumped to 2750MHz. Although it’s faster, Samsung said that it’s also more power-efficient.

For those who are into artificial intelligence computing, Exynos 990 includes a dual-core neural processing unit (NPU) with an improved digital signal processor (DSP) that allows over ten-trillion operations per second (TOPS).

There’s a good chance that the assumed Galaxy S11 Series will feature built-in 5G support already, sporting the new Exynos Modem 5123. It supports both sub-6 and mmWave that enable up to 7350Mbps download speed (DL). But for the 4G LTE category, the DL is up to 3000Mbps with up to 422Mbps upload speed (UL).

Outside the spec sheet, we’re looking at up to 8K @ 30fps video recording or up to 4K @ 120fps. The camera is said to support up to 108MP in a single lens configuration and two 24.8MP for a dual-lens setup.
